Nursing is a challenging and rewarding job, so many people who already have college degrees are attracted to it. But which second degree nursing programs should you choose? It largely depends on which track, or way of completing your second degree in nursing, is right for you and your particular circumstances. Most schools of nursing offer traditional second degree nursing programs, in which they accept your first two years of general education--about 60 hours--and you complete two years of nursing courses, about another 60 hours. You may have to take some science prerequisites before admission, especially if your first major was not in a science. Since your coursework is spread out over two years, this gives your schedule more flexibility, and it may be possible to work while going to school. Nursing students often work in hospitals or nursing homes. Many schools are now offering accelerated second degree nursing programs, in which you can complete second degree nursing programs in a year.
